Can you remember who won last week's Super Bowl? (By the way, it was Super Bowl "45." For the life of me I don't understand why they still use Roman Numerals. Who uses Roman Numerals anymore?) Even if you don't follow football, you probably know that the game was won by the Green Bay Packers. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25. Most of us know that because the information is fresh in our minds. A lot of us watched the game. Some of us attended a Super Bowl Party. Most all of us at least heard about it on the news or read about it in the paper.
But here's a question for you. Who won Super Bowl XXX? Who won Super Bowl VII? I would be really surprised if ANYONE could answer that from pure memory! Why? Because they happened years ago. It's been a long time since we felt the need to read up on or stay familiar with the story line of the game. We probably watched those games back then, but for the life of us, we couldn't tell you who played in the game much less which team won!
If you had spent the last few years reading about Super Bowl XXX or VII you would still know who won those games. If you took the time to watch films of those games over the years you would probably remember most every play and be able to talk about every detail.
Remembering who won Super Bowl XXX or VII is really not all that important in the scope of things. Your life won't be impacted one way or the other by the ability to recall and remember the outcome of those games.
Remembering who God is and what God has done for you, however, is an extremely important thing to know. A fresh understanding and daily awareness of His presence makes all the difference in how we experience life. Remembering his truths, knowing his story, learning his Word can impact our lives significantly. How do we keep that memory alive? How do we keep our attention focused on all He has done? How do we keep a relationship with Him front and center in our mind and in our heart?
We WORSHIP regularly! We make an intentional decision to be INVOLVED in the ministry and mission of our church! We spend time in personal PRAYER and devotional STUDY. These disciplines keep our knowledge of God and his work in us fresh and alive! Neglecting these disciplines causes many of us to drift from any significant remembering or awareness of the importance of God in our lives.
By the way...The Dallas Cowboys beat the Steelers 27-17 in Super Bowl XXX. The Miami Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII. Trust me...I didn't remember either of those scores or those teams. But it doesn't really matter, does it?
Till next time...
Stuart
